Raku’ Firing
Method:
Raku’ is
a firing method developed during the 16th century and was related
to the zen tea ceremony. My pots have an extra step added to
the method to create the stunning golden/ orange color.
Each pot
is individually fast fired and removed from the kiln while still
red hot (1700’F). Then
is treated in various ways depending on the results I want. Most
of the golden pots are taken from the kiln and sprayed with ferric
chloride.
This whole
process has a very short window in which the wind and other conditions
play their part. After that, as quickly as possible the pot is
put into reduction atmosphere (hay, sawdust, & dung) exchanging
oxygen with carbon in the cracked glass surface of the pot.
The unpredictable
variables involved in the pot firing process gives each pot its
own unique character. Raku’ fired pots are porous, naturally
cracked and at times the smoke residue is left on the pot to
enhance its appearance, Raku
is a very decorative form of pottery.
Enjoy your
pot.
